2009 Flu: Understanding the Symptoms

Swine flu has affected great masses of people this year and it’s termed to be the pandemic 2009 flu. It’s an infection that spreads among the pigs and the people who come in proximity with these animals are most likely to be infected too. It is a highly contagious infection causes by the novel H1N1 virus, a newly discovered strain of influenza A virus.

It started off in Mexico this year and then spread all over the world. By June 2009, the WHO declared it to be a pandemic, even though majority of the cases were of mild severity. The overall casualty rate remained less too. The massive spread of the disease is contributed to extremely contagious nature of infection. The virus may be air-borne, food borne or transferred via simple physical contact. Sneezing, coughing, sharing food/drink, using same utensils, physically touching the affected person without precautionary measures can lead to the transmission of novel H1N1 virus.

The flu symptoms 2009 are very much similar to those of the common cold or seasonal flu. If your regular flu symptoms persist longer than the usual span or manifest in greater severity, you are required to rush for immediate medical help. Such flu symptoms 2009 include fever, headache, muscular pain, runny nose, nausea, joint pain, coughing, sore throat, etc.

In most swine flu cases, the symptoms recede after a week or so. But the people who are more at risk of developing serious problems with flu symptoms 2009 are the ones having obesity, asthma, coronary problems, diabetes, etc. Infants and old-age population are more likely of having severe form of 2009 flu. Similarly, the pregnant women are required to take greater care in this regard.

The flu symptoms 2009 occasionally cause death but this occurs only in the most severe cases. Other associated complications can be bronchitis, sinus infection, pneumonia, etc. So, you must take utmost care in interacting with people nowadays as the transfer of virus can take place even if the other person is not showing apparent symptoms e.g. after the symptoms are actively gone.
